インドネシア話 農漁業
Pulisanに住む人たちは、フィリピンから２世代ほど前にこの地に住み着いた人たちがほとんどなのだけれど、歴史的政治的な問題で、土地を所有することが許されていないのだとか。そのために、毎年実をつけるような果樹を植えることが許されず、1年ごとに収穫できるものしか植えられない上に土地がやせているので、生活が苦しいという。そんな事情もあってこの地域の人たちのほとんどは漁師で生計をたてている。「台湾の人たちが船で近くまできていて、いいものがあがると、彼らが陸にあがる前に買い占めてしまうから、ここのリゾートまではなかなかいい魚が届かないのよ」とカトリんは苦笑する。
一方、途中ハイランドとよばれる地域に1日でかけたのだが、こちらは８０００年（！）前にこの地に住み着いた中国系の人たちが住んでいて、肌の色や顔だちが私たち日本人に近い。このあたりは火山が多く、温泉も出るし、土地は肥沃でなんでも育つのだとか。山間部にも傾斜した斜面いっぱいにキャベツやにんじんや芋などさまざまなものが植えられている。人参畑の中に白いきれいな花がたくさんあるので何かきいたら、「次に植えるための種をとらなくちゃいけないでしょ。だから一部は収穫しないで花をさかせるのよ」。継続的に収穫しようとすればあたりまえのことなんだけれど、先進国とよばれる国々では、1世代しか収穫できない種が売られていたり、自家採種を禁じる契約があったりするから人参の花を見たことがなかったのかしらん、、、とちょっと複雑な気持ちに。この地方では、米は３回収穫できるのだそうだ。日本では１度だけだというと、驚いていた。
