インドネシア ジャングル
Pulisanから、タンココというNatural Reserveにでかけた。ワシントン大学で猿の行動を研究しているというアメリカ人の女性に会う。National Parkになっていないので資金調達が難しく、自然保護が難しいのだとか。彼女は、人間に慣れた野生の猿の群れと、そうでない猿たちとの間で、ストレスがどの程度違うかを研究しているのだという。彼女の当初の予想と違って、人間に慣れた群れの方がストレスレベルが低いのだそうだ。Black Akaeの群れは、驚いたことに、私たちをみつけると自分たちからこちらに寄ってくる。
さらにジャングルを進むと、ブッシュベイビーのような猿（名前わすれた！）がいる大木が。私たち以外にも観光客はおり、暗くなってからでないと外にでてこないため、みな（私も含めてなのだが）フラッシュをたく。研究者の彼女に「目は大丈夫なの？」ときくと苦笑して「難しい問題なのよ。観光客がこないことには、ここの自然を守るお金を集められない。でも観光客がくれば自然は確実にかわってしまうのよ。この猿たちが夜にしかでてこないのは、光に弱い目をもっているからなのよね。」と応える。自然保護の難しさを思った。
暗くなってから船で戻る。1時間弱かかるその間、私はずっと横になって星空を眺めていた。こんなに星があるのかと思うほど。急に娘が叫ぶ「ママみて、海が光っているよ」。蛍光性のプランクトンだ。カナダでフルムーンパドル（満月の晩にカイヤックで海にでること）をした時を思い出す。ひとかきするごとに海の表面が光っていたっけ。星空を見、光る海をみると、こんな景色に出会えるだけで、「生きているっていいなあ」と素直に思える。
