インドネシア 海
海（lau）って、すごい。あらためて今回思った。GWにでかけたタイのコーチャン（象の島という意味）では、１艘の船に５０人もの人をのせてスノーケリングをする。ほとんどの人がサンゴが、その上に立ったら死んでしまうといったことも知らない。ハードコラル（固い珊瑚）の上にたっている人がいるのを、夫が「サンゴが死ぬから立ったらだめだ」と注意しても「This is not coral but rock」な〜んていっているくらい何もしらない。なんでタイの人たちはそれを注意しないんだろう。それが私たちのフラストレーションだった。
スラウェシの珊瑚は、今まで潜ったどこの海よりも美しかった。生物の多様性も信じられないほど。ツーリズムと自然保護。本当に難しい問題だと思う。カナダのブリティッシュコロンビア州では、ある特定の木の回りは家をたててはいけないとか、いくつかの山野草については抜いてはいけないとか、鷲が巣をつくっている木は切ってはいけないとか、さまざまなルールがある。なんでそこまで、という思いもなくはないが、そこまでしなければ守れない自然というものもある。Super Natural British Colombiaを維持するために必要なトラストなのだ。
最後に３日間とまったマナドのMurexでは、「来年になれば、ジャクージとスウィミングプールができてますよ。是非またきてください」といわれたが、あえて、「We want this region as it is . We don't have any complains.」というのが夫の意見。このあたりは都会と地方とのあり方としてはほんとうに難しい問題だと思う。
バンカに住むダイブマスターのケンは、「You live in cities so you want nature. But we live in a small island. We want cities.」結局、隣の芝生は青いということなんだろうか。
